Resignation

An employee may resign at any time up until the age of fifty-five years. An employee who has attained the age of fifty-five years may elect to retire.

Notice period

Employees should provide formal written notification of their resignation with the following minimum period of notice:

  • Principal Class employees: 12 weeks (or such other period as agreed in writing by both parties);
  • Victorian Public Service employees : 4 weeks (or such other period as agreed by both parties); or
  • All other employees: 2 weeks.

A letter of resignation should include:

  • The date (and hour) of the proposed last day of duty.
  • The date from, and inclusive of which, the resignation is intended.
  • A private address to which correspondence may be sent (if different to that recorded on the payroll).
  • The reason for the resignation.

In addition to this formal notification, employees are encouraged to indicate informally their intention to resign as early as possible to assist in timely workforce planning. Employees may vary their resignation intentions at any time prior to providing formal written notification.

Unless otherwise agreed by the principal or manager (or in the case of a principal, the Regional Director), a request to withdraw a resignation will not be accepted after the date of receipt of the formal written notification. 

Employees who are successful in gaining a job with another school or a public entity under the Public Administration Act 2004 are not required to resign. For further information see Transfer/Promotion topic below under Related Topics.

Employees who are successful in gaining a job with a public sector or statutory authority, a local governing body, a state owned enterprise or TAFE institution would generally be required to resign from the Department. Employees in these circumstances are advised to contact their new employer regarding capacity to transfer accrued leave entitlements. Employees should contact their superannuation fund for information regarding transfer of superannuation provisions.
