Language Aide Allowance
Where a VPS employee, in addition to his or her normal duties, agrees to be appointed by the Department to use their skills in a language other than English to undertake work involving direct contact with members of the public who have low English proficiency, he/she may be eligible for an annual Language Aide Allowance as set out below, payable in fortnightly instalments.

The employee must hold a current accreditation from the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.
Employees must apply annually for renewal of the allowance (usually in June/July each year) when the Department calls for requests to receive the allowance.
Where an employee wishes to receive this allowance, a request must be submitted to Corporate HR Services, supported by a recommendation from the employee's work unit manager. The employee will then be required to sit for a language aide test.
Further information about the language aide allowance, including the Victorian Public Service guidelines, is available from the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
